Volley Ball

Meet players in your area

The game of Volleyball was invented in the year 1895 by William G.

Morgan. It is a very popular game played in many countries across the

globe. It is played between two teams. Each team consists of six players.

It is played with the help of a ball which is thrown to the other side of the

net to score points. The objective of the game is to maximum points. It is

played on a rectangular court with markings on the floor and a net at the

centre.

The game begins by tossing a coin. The winning team can choose to

serve, receive or choose a side to play. First, a player serves the ball over

the net by hitting it with the wrist. The opposing then team tries to return

the ball. If they fail to do so, the first team receives points. If they return

the ball then the first team also tries to return ball. This continues until a

team fails to return the ball and the opposite team receives points. The

duration of volleyball game depends on the number of sets. There may be

3 sets in a game where if a team wins 2 sets, they win the game. Also a

game may consist of 5 sets where if a team wins 3 sets, they win the

game. Each set can last about 15-25 minutes.

Equipment:-

Ball:- Ball should have a circumference of about 25-27 inches. The ball

must weight 9-10 ounces and can be inflated to 4.3-4.6 pounds.

Net:- The net is 1 meter or 3 feet by 9.5 m or 32 feet when stretched.

The net is attached to poles that are 1 meter or 3 feet outside the court.

Shoes:- Volleyball shoes are light in weight which allows the players to

move quickly as they like.

Clothing:- One of the rules of volleyball is that the player including their

clothes should not touch the net. That’s why players need to wear fit

clothes. This can greatly reduce the chances of causing a foul.

Court Measurements:-

The length of the volleyball court is 18 m and width is 9 m. It is

recommended that the area above the court should be 7 meter high.

Court Markings:-

Boundary Lines:- They form a rectangular shape around the court. The

short boundary lines are called endlines and the long boundary lines are

called sidelines. Lines should be 5 cm or 2 inches wide.

Centre Line:- It extends from sideline to sideline under the net. It divides

the court into 2 halves.

Attack Lines:- They extend from sideline to sideline and are 3 meters

from the centre line.

Serving Area:- It is the area behind the endlines from where the server

serves the ball. It extends from sideline to sideline. It should be at least 2

meters or 6 feet deep.

Substitution Zone:- Area between attack line and centre line is called

substitution zone.
