Tennis as a recreational form of sport has been in vogue for quite some

time now. Even though it is a sport that requires some level of fitness,

with regular exercise, one can master it easily if serious efforts are put in.

It has proven to be a major stress buster and helps in keeping people of

all ages alike, in shape. It has become a favourite choice amongst sports

for young people since it is also credited with the full-body workout it

provides alongside the fun and laughter it brings while you play around

with your family and friends. It won’t be wrong to say that this sport has

an indistinguishable aura that allows it to travel through time and never

go out of style.  So, it’s not shocking that quite a number of sporting

facilities, coaching academics, and large stadiums are always available to

provide for its infrastructure and training.

It is a sport that is racket-based. It can be played in the forms of singles,

doubles, and even mixed doubles. The versatility of the game is what

draws people’s attention to it. Even if it ends up being you and your

younger brother or sister; you can still play it. There is no need for a

team.       

Now let’s understand what happens in these different formats of play.

When it comes to singles, only two players get to play together. Each

player takes up their place opposite each other, on the opposite ends of

the play area (the tennis court).

This changes a bit when it comes to doubles. Now, you not only need to

pay attention to your own play but also work as an effective team to

outwit the opponent. Now, two members belonging to the same team are

on one end of the court and they stand opposite to the other team. Over

the period of time; we have seen quite a number of legendary

personalities like Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Steffi Graf, & Martina

Navratilova, which something different from the ones that we have known

forever like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and of course, Rafael Nadal.  

In tennis, the use of rackets that are oval in shape is customary. It has

strings working like chequered cords so that the rubber ball when stricken

can be thrown back with similar or more intensity. It has a handle that

provides that player with a firm grip in order to not suffer any injury to

their hand.

As mentioned earlier, Tennis is a game played among two people

(singles) and among four people (Doubles and Mixed). The categories are

further discussed below:

Singles

This is a competition between two players that are opponents. They are

both either men or women who play against each other to win. The game

commences and ends within the singles’ side lines of the concerned court.

Usually, singles are played between two male players or two female

players. But on certain occasions; there have been exhibition matches

that involve matches between men and women that are largely played out

for social causes like charity.

Doubles

This competition takes place with two pairs of all-men or all-women

participants. While such a play is about to happen; the court is put to

wider use and for that; doubles’ side-lines are used.

Mixed Doubles

Although the competition between men and women is kept apart and

undertaken by different organizing bodies, a mixed doubles competition is

organized during the famous Grand Slam tournament. In these teams;

men and women can together play as teams and compete at the same

time. But the rules concerning this match remain as it is in Doubles.
